Auto related ramblings after the jump
Frankly I dont see why we need cars to be so damn good. Imagine how much better new cars could be if all the useless stuff like sound deadning was never included. It would be cheaper faster and lighter at the expence of mildly different comfort.
Peaple complain about just how shitty a sonic or a yaris is but thats bullshit, they just have high standards. Why cant peaple acually appreciate the fact that those cars are amazing compaired to real crap cars ie runs on three cylinders, has broken seats, squeaky panels, and the rigidity of a plastic spork. As someone who has grown up with cheap cars it pains me to think that some peaple find new cars,”cheap” even with all the padding and interior panels. The car could be a whole lot,”worse” without these things.(even though they would be better) Maybe I’m an asshole, maybe peaple take for granted what they have.
If you cant tell already my writing skill is about 3 out of 10 so try to understand the point I’m conveying.

I agree. I think too many people expect everything out of a car, for cheaper. A Mirage/Sonic/Fiesta has a cheap interior? No Shit. IT’S A CHEAP CAR. In the case of a Mirage, it feels weak and flimsy? IT WEIGHS LESS THAN A LOTUS ELISE.

I think your kinda right. Problem is people want everything especially when they are laying down what used to be the price of a small home, for a mid sized sedan.

My brother bought a Sonic and I like it. To me it isn't a cheap car even though it's lower on the price scale for new. I've never had anything less than 8 years old anyway so to me it's amazing. Everything works and there's little wear and tear (unlike mine), I don't envy his payments though

Agreed. My Jetta doesn’t have a great interior but for how cheap it was, it’s perfect.
A lot of this expectation comes from auto journalists though. They nitpick every little detail that isn’t “luxurious” or “advanced” and that causes people to shit on those cars.

I only consider a car terrible if the seat is uncomfortable and it has limpdick steering. As long as it can get up to highway speeds everything else is irrelevrent.

I bought a newish 60hp hatchback who’s most advanced feature is remote central locking, so I support your point. I appreciate simplicity provided the stuff that is there is of good quality and reliable.

To my family if its newer than 2002 its,”new” I make remarks about the luxury of a base 07 camry

We’ve got a taste and we’ll never go back I guess.

$35k can get you everything and then some. honestly $20k compacts can be VERY well equipped. I don’t think there is a Mid-size that doesn’t have great value, the only widespread criticism I’ve heard from the entire segment is the Chrysler 200’s stupid 9spd transmission.

Excuse me sir but you misspoke. A Sonic isn’t shitty, especially not next to a Yaris

I have an 05 and it has a cassette deck, how I yearn for a simple aux jack instead of my cassette adaptor.
We also just got a “new” 1995 f150 and I really like that because it feels like an honest work truck instead of luxury one.

I honestly think autojournalists are the only reason people give a shit about 90% of the interior being “soft”. Who the fuck is rubbing their face all over those press cars?
![]() 05/24/2015 at 10:43 |
|
That's exactly it. Honestly, as long as my seat and my armrest are soft you can make the rest of the interior out of steel for all I care.

Im saying your sonic is too nice. It could have been cheaper faster and better on gas had the sound deadening never been installed and if the plastics were less abundant and of cheaper quality.
Damn fine Sonic by the way

New trucks feel exactly like a lexus suv but they should feel Way worse.

I get it. People rag on the FR-S/BRZ for having a lousy cheap interior, but the truth is it’s the best interior of any car I’ve owned. It’s also the first brand new car I’ve ever owned, and the first newish car I’ve owned since 1995. In fact I opted to NOT get the top of the line BRZ because features like automatic climate control and push button start aren’t necessary for me.
Unless I need to tow, I’d take one of these over an SUV any day.

I wish interiors followed the contures of the frame rather than just being massive lumps of heavy plastic that dont serve a purpose other than to look,”good”
Dont even get me started on sound deadening.

Same goes for saying plastic interiors are “cheap.” Sorry that your dashboard isn’t upholstered in the finest Pygmy Giraffe hide, you opulent fuck.

Totally agree.
I seriously considered dumping my car with an automatic transmission, AC, cruise control and ABS for something with none of those. Power nothing. Didn’t even have front windows.
![]() 05/24/2015 at 19:06 |

Yeah I purposely removed all sound deadening, ac, power steering, and added solid torque mounts. Now the car is worth driving, that being said peaple I know think that I’ve,”destroyed” my car. Some peaple just dont get it.

Here is your new car. Even powered by a GM Ecotec engine. No interior fluff, no sound deadening, no roof, no doors. Not even an un-necessary fourth wheel to add weight.
Polaris Slingshot.

Lower?
![]() 05/28/2015 at 03:47 |

Two points: The Civic wagovan has a super high quality interior with copious sound insulation, and my FR-S’ dashboard is literally falling apart after 10 months of parking in the San Francisco heat.
Luxury is unnecessary. Durability, less so.

That suspension looks surprisingly excellent. Are you that guy who willingly chose Sonic over FR-S?

FRS was never a consideration.
I like the ability to carry things and people
